Abstract
The arrival of foreign citizens to Spain and across the world is a permanent and
constantly increasing phenomenon that shapes current societies. In recent years, we
have evidenced a great step towards multiculturalism and linguistic pluralism in many
different countries, which implies new challenges for the coexistence and
communication between different cultures in the same geographic space, being the
responsibility of society to implement new tools for the assurance of integration and
understanding between them. However, new migration patterns have emerged and the

arrival of Foreign Unaccompanied Minors in many European countries presents a great
challenge.
The main objective of this paper is to shed some light on Translation,
Interpreting and Intercultural Mediation services in residential child care centers for
Foreign Unaccompanied Minors, and to analyze their needs and the current reality of
these services.
Foreign Unaccompanied Minors are a complex collective, and present different
types of linguistic, social, religious and cultural barriers. Therefore, we assume that the
Translators, Interpreters and Intercultural Mediators who work with them must have
specific training, as well as certain skills that we will try to elucidate. The methodology
that is proposed is an introductory theoretical study on Foreign Unaccompanied Minors,
current immigration figures, their profile, and the national, European and international
legislation on child protection. Later, an analysis of the measures for the protection of
minors and the current figure of translators, interpreters and intercultural mediators in
Spain will be provided in order to finally analyze the reality and needs of this sector.
Then, the results of the survey and the theoretical exposition of different authors will
confirm the hypothesis about the need for translation, interpretation and intercultural
mediation services to ensure the well-being and complete care of the child. To
conclude, the inclusion of these services is presented as an indispensable requirement
for the best interests of the child. Finally, we speak about the training of translators,
interpreters and intercultural mediators needed in this area, the ideal profile of this
figure and some proposals for its implementation.
