Abstract
Agriculture is one of the mam causes of degradation and destruction of the natural ecosystems around the planet. The expansion of the agricultura frontier together with intensification has negative effects on biodiversity and other ecosystem services different from production itself. Ecological restoration is presented as a solution to reconcile agricultura production while preserving or enhancing biodiversity and other ecosystem services other than production in agroecosystems. The main objective of the project is to design, implement and evaluate actions of ecological restoration without competing for land use in an abandoned agricultura field of 6.25 ha in Valdilecha (Madrid, Spain). The proposed actions are compatible with an eventual exploitation of the target field by occupying only 1.96% of the total land area. The actions carried out and their objectives were: (a) plantation of two perimeter hedges with native species to increase biodiversity levels and ecosystem services of the target plot; (b) plantation of two woodland islets that serve as a source of propagules for forest regeneration; and (c) creation of a pond and plantation of a border of perimeter vegetation that mitigate the loss of the priority habitat 3170 (Mediterranean temporary ponds) that is currently threatened in the EU. The survival rate of the 951 individuals of 14 woody species planted after the first summer was 74%, which is considered successful. The project has a total cost of 9.595,79 € and 1,535.32€/ha.
