| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | Today, developing knowledge is the key to the development of the individual. This means that knowledge becomes the foundations for the development of
Society, its economy and Society’s structure as a whole. In these terms not only are we discussing technical and social knowledge, but also knowledge of
human action, of individual development. This in turn implies social change as Society moves towards an economy that is more dependent upon the individual
and those Institutions that contribute to their development.
Universities have always been at the very centre of the development of knowledge, involved in both its transfer, as well as its creation and development
through research. The configuration of the traditional University is that of being a key Teaching Institution with the articulation of research at its heart, while its
social legitimacy rests upon the twin pillars of the development of the individual and its contribution to the development of Society itself.
In this document, Prof. Stefan Leible, President of the relatively new University of Bayreuth which was created forty years ago, gives a highly accurate account
of the process by which a University – a citadel of learning – ventures outside its academic walls and other traditional spaces. Thus the University’s involvement
in the development of its surrounding Region, and in the development of the corresponding economic and social agents within the framework of increasing
globalisation, poses new methods of sharing knowledge and disciplines in order to both respond to the demand for knowledge to be developed; for the
multidisciplinarity and multiculturalism that generates universal and humanistic values such as “cooperation” with “others”, as well as in order to be able to
contribute to innovation which is key to the development of the individual and his or her organisations within the knowledge context.
In terms of such an evolution, the University of Bayreuth is a veritable pilot project and the project is perfectly encapsulated here by its President, Prof. Stefan
Leible. | en |
