La onomástica como indicador de identidad en el Bajo Imperio romano. Una aproximación a las problemáticas analíticas

Abstract

La definición de las identidades (culturales, religiosas, sociales, étnicas) en el Bajo Imperio romano y los primeros reinos germánicos (ss. V-VI d. C.) ha sido, y está siendo, objeto de una profunda revisión en los últimos años. En este sentido, el uso de criterios onomásticos no siempre ha tenido en cuenta la enorme complejidad que entraña esta cuestión a la hora de definir las identidades. En este estudio, mediante ejemplos diversos, analizaremos las principales características de las costumbres onomásticas bajoimperiales y las diversas problemáticas que se presentan al investigador cuando se trata de traducir estos datos a la caracterización social, religiosa o étnica de sus “propietarios”.

At the end of the fourth century, the bishop Ambrose of Milan defended the biblical leDefinition of identities (whether cultural, religious, social, ethnic) in Late Roman Empire and early German kingdoms (5th-6th centuries AD) has been, and is already being, object of deep revision in the last years. Given this, the use of onomastic criteria has not always paid attention to the enormous complexity within this issue when it comes to define identities. By using several examples, we are going to analyse, in this study, the main features of Late Roman onomastic habits and the various troubles which the scholar has to face when it comes to translate these facts into their “holders’” social, religious, or ethnic characterisation.
