Mujeres conversas e identidad en la Castilla medieval (1449-1534): del orgullo por el linaje judío al disimulo de los orígenes

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende revelar las concepciones sobre la identidad judeo-conversa manejadas por las mujeres castellanas en el tránsito entre la Edad Media y la Edad Moderna, a través del pensamiento de Teresa de Cartagena y María de Cazalla. La primera reivindicaba su origen judío en una época en que la mayoría de los intelectuales conversos defendía la supresión de las diferencias entre cristianos viejos y nuevos, mientras que la progresiva degeneración de la situación y del trato recibido por los conversos hacía recomendable que María de Cazalla disimulase sus ancestros judíos. Ambas ejemplifican cómo los conversos se enfrentaron a su identidad de formas diversas, y demuestran que no se puede reducir el papel de las mujeres judeo-conversas a su relación con el cripto-judaísmo.

This article aims to reveal the conceptions about converso identity used by Castilian women between the medieval and modern periods by considering the thought of Teresa de Cartagena and María de Cazalla. The former emphasised her Jewish origins when most of the converso intellectuals defended the removal of the differences between old and new Christians, while the increasing degeneration of the situation and the treatment received by the new Christians made María de Cazalla conceal her Jewish ancestors. Both women exemplify how the new Christians dealt with the issue of identity, and they both demonstrate that the role of the converso women can not be reduced to their link with crypto-Judaism
