Abstract
This paper analyzes various aspects related to overall happiness expressed by 99 people who make their living in the dumps of León (Nicaragua) - a group that is difficult to access, heavily stigmatized, and living in extreme poverty. We interviewed all the people living from the garbage in the city of León using a heteroapplied structured interview. In order to gather information on overall happiness, we used an instrument that combined illustrations with explanations by the interviewers. The results show that people in León who make their living by collecting rubbish state that they are happy, have optimistic expectations regarding their future, and show a lack of any relationship between overall happiness and income. The respondents appear to obtain their main sources of happiness in areas of their lives other than the economic and labour spheres, and mainly from areas related to their social and leisure activities.
 
El trabajo analiza diferentes aspectos relacionados con la felicidad general manifestada por 99 personas que obtienen su sustento en los basureros de León (Nicaragua), un colectivo de difícil acceso, fuertemente estigmatizado, que vive en situación de extrema pobreza. Se entrevistó a todas las personas que viven de la basura en la ciudad de León utilizando una entrevista estructurada heteroaplicada. Para recoger información sobre felicidad general se utilizó un instrumento que conjugaba ilustraciones junto a explicaciones por parte de los entrevistadores. Los resultados muestran que las personas de León que encuentran su sustento en la basura manifiestan ser felices, con expectativas optimistas en relación a su futuro, observándose una ausencia de relación entre felicidad general y nivel de renta. Los entrevistados parecen obtener sus principales fuentes de felicidad de ámbitos de su vida diferentes al económico y laboral, principalmente de aspectos vinculadas a sus relaciones sociales y sus actividades de ocio
