Restauración agroecológica estratégica en un cultivo herbáceo de secano en España central

Abstract

El avance de la frontera agrícola y los procesos de intensificación han convertido a la agricultura en la principal causa de degradación ambiental. Los agroecosistemas ocupan aproximadamente el 40% de la superficie terrestre del planeta. En consecuencia, es necesario conciliar la agricultura y la conservación de la biodiversidad y sus servicios. La restauración agroecológica estratégica, es decir, la ejecución de acciones que favorecen a la biodiversidad y servicios ecosistémicos concretos sin competir por el uso de la tierra, es una herramienta útil que permite aumentar la sostenibilidad de los agroecosistemas. El principal objetivo del presente proyecto es diseñar y ejecutar actuaciones de restauración agroecológica estratégica en un campo de cultivo herbáceo de secano localizado en una Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves en Novés (Toledo, España). Las actuaciones llevadas a cabo fueron: 1) plantación de un seto perimetral con 1.607 individuos de 14 especies arbustivas autóctonas para incrementar los niveles de biodiversidad y de servicios ecosistémicos; 2) instalación de siete posaderos para Mochuelo europeo (Athene noctua) para favorecer a esta especie con poblaciones en declive y contribuir al control biológico de plagas; 3) construcción de una charca de 13 m2 para favorecer la fauna silvestre y plantas acuáticas, y plantación de una orla de vegetación a su alrededor y 4) diseño e instalación de un panel informativo para la difusión de estas medidas entre los vecinos, agricultores y cazadores. El presupuesto de la ejecución ascendió a 8.490’67 € y el del mantenimiento y seguimiento durante los seis primeros años a 4.580’90 € y 3.007’47 € respectivamente Concluimos que las acciones de restauración agroecológica estratégica ejecutadas en este proyecto tienen un impacto positivo en la biodiversidad local y apenas compiten por la superficie cultivada al ocupar sólo el 1’44% de la parcela agrícola.

Agriculture has become in the main cause of environmental degradation due to the progress of the agricultural frontier and the process of intensification. Agro-systems span over the 40% of the land surface of the earth. Consequently, it is necessary to conciliate agriculture activities and the conservation of the biodiversity and its services. The strategic agro-ecological restauration, i.e. the execution of actions favoring biodiversity and eco-systemic services without competing for land use is a useful tool for improving sustainability of agro-systems. The main objective of this project is to design and execute actions of strategic agro-ecological restauration in a rainfed herbaceous crop located in an Area of Special Protection for birds in Novés (Toledo, Spain). The actions were: 1) planting a hedge perimetral with 1.607 individuals from fourteen shrubby local species to increase the levels of biodiversity and eco-systemic services; 2) installation of seven owl watch-tower (Athene noctua) to favor this specie with a declining population and contributing to biological control of plagues; 3) building a pond of 13 m2 to favor wild fauna and aquatic plants and planting a border of vegetation around, 4) designing and installation of an informative panel for the diffusion of these actions among visitors, farmers and hunters. The budget was of 8.490’67 €, and the maintenance and chase budget for the six first years is of 4.580’9 € and 3.007’47 € respectively. We conclude that the actions of strategic agro-ecological restauration in this project have a positive impact on the local biodiversity and weakly compete with the agricultural land because they only span 1’44 % of agricultural extension.
