This paper proposes a critical approach to the novel “El desbarrancadero” (2001) by Fernando Vallejo, aiming to hypothesize the presence in the text of many topics, spaces, figures and concepts that remit to the imagery of Gothic fiction. However, if the narrative enables this kind of approach, there is not a simple adoption of elements but a double operation which can be characterized as parody and trivialization of Gothic imagery. The parody is performed on the spaces and figures, and also on the representations of Catholicism. The trivialization, meanwhile, is present on the concepts that shape the narrator´s cosmovision, and also on the peculiar construction of temporality, moulded by memory and the returns of death. On this double textual strategy of parody and trivialization the narrator builds a burlesque invective that remarks the terrible character yet laughable (in short, grotesque) of his own family, of Colombian society and, in a broader sense, of human existence.en
