This article shall analyse definitions from the dictionary Diccionario fraseológico documentado del español actual (2004) by Manuel Seco et al., in which the authors mainly draw upon the literal meaning rather than upon the figurative. Among other things, we will consider dictionary entries which lack the most figurative meaning, entries for which the literal meaning is out of place and definitions that are based too much on the literal meaning, and we will also analyse the structure of the information in the definiens. The results of these analyses will be compared with data from the internet. In general, we believe that a good number of phraseological units shows a semantical transposition, and it is the result of this process which must be the object of the phraseological definition.en
