Abstract
This work analyses the characterization and narrative roles of
Governayle, Tristan’s governor, and Brangien, Iseo’s chambermaid, in
Tristán de Leonís (Juan de Burgos, 1501), from the perspective of the social
estate. For this purpose, we show how the characterization and the role of
these two characters depend on the needs of their lords. Both Governayle
and Brangien represent the male and female ideal of the perfect servant.
These two characters personify obedience to their lords, as it corresponds to
their status of vassals of the main characters.
