Abstract

In this paper we analyze the remarkable diffusion of La vida de la sacratíssima verge Maria (Valencia, 1494, Nicolás Spindaler) in the first half of the Sixteenth century, an original text by the Valencian author Miquel Peres, that contributed to lay the foundation of the genre of Mariae vitae in Iberia. The work was printed up to six times in Castilian, but also served as a basis for the composition of new titles, as the works of Juan de Molina and Francisco de Trasmiera. This remarkable reception shows that this work satisfied the interests of a public used to read devotional works, and also shows that there was not any other text of its kind, that is, an hagiography of the Virgin Mary. The book is also an example for the translation and transmission of texts between the different peninsular kingdoms in the beginning of the Modern Age.
