In recent research on verb + adverb collocations, the hypothesis maintaining that verbs and adverbs of manner share semantic characteristics that classify verbs in semantic paradigms is proving to be true. This article shows that the same occurs in complex collocations composed of a verb and an adverbial idiom: preguntar a bocajarro (ask point-blank). If adverbial idioms of manner determine the establishment of semantic paradigms of verbs, the characteristics of binarism and arbitrarity, which are present in some definitions of collocation, are not of use in distinguishing this linguistic unit, which, furthermore, does not meet the norm. To the existing theoretical implications we can add other applied ones, relative to the compilation of dictionaries of collocations and their teaching and learning in SFL, which is of particular interest in units considered to be specific to one language and unmotivated.en
