Abstract
This article examines the history of Spanish dance beyond Spain's borders. It analyzes such topics as the choreographic use of "popular Spanish dances in Romantic ballets and the present day, in which Spanish dance is kept off "elite" stages (opera) but is highly successful on "commercial" stages. An overview is given of choreography from Spain and of choreography with Spanish themes from the 19th century through the mid-20th century.
