Abstract

In the following article I will discuss the contribution of the first Icelandic literary and historiographical works to the process of the construction of national identity. Likewise I will analyse the manner in which the reinterpretation of certain elements of the collective memory was employed by the authors of the Icelandic Sagas to shape a new ideology and in some cases worked to legitimise the aspirations of the political elites in the XIIth and XIIIth centuries.
