Los falos de piedra de Los Hinojosos (Cuenca). Notas sobre su culto extinguido

Abstract

La esterilidad de la mujer siempre fue considerada como un oprobio en las culturas antiguas, pues la supervivencia del grupo estaba ligada a la reproducción. En casi todas las culturas antiguas, tanto las europeas, como las egipcias, asiáticas o sudamericanas, encontramos el culto al falo como un medio de garantizar no sólo la reproducción de la especie, sino también la fertilidad de la naturaleza. En Los Hinojosos (Cuenca) todavía encontramos ocho de estos falos y hasta 1928 se mantuvo la costumbre de que después de la boda, novios y convidados acudieran a danzar al Santo (donde están los falos) rememorando la ancestral costumbre pagana.

In ancient cultures, woman’s infertility was always considered as opprobrium, since the group’s survival was associated with reproduction. In almost every ancient culture, European as well as Egyptian, Asian or South American, we can find the worship of the Phallus as a means of guaranteeing not only the reproduction of the species, but also the fertility of nature. In Los Hinojosos (Cuenca, Spain) we can still come across eight of these phalluses and it is worth mentioning that until 1928 after a wedding was held, the engaged couple and guests were in the habit of going dancing in the Saint’s honour (to the place where the phalli are), thereby remembering the ancient pagan tradition.
