“Ciudadanos sobre mesa”. Construcción del “Sonorense” bajo el régimen de Porfirio Díaz (México, 1876-1910)

Abstract

Una vez independiente, cada país latinoamericano fue llamado a la reorganización económico‐política interna y de la identidad socio‐cultural de sus ciudadanos. En México, sin embargo, el difuso regionalismo así como la carencia de las infraestructuras básicas de comunicación – imperantes hasta finales de siglo XIX – favorecieron que cada entidad radicara fuertemente la praxis al propio contexto geohistorico. A la par de las otras áreas, por ejemplo, Sonora compartía la desconfianza hacia los indígenas, “estorbo” al desarrollo. Asimismo, participaba de la necesidad de buscar afuera de las fronteras nacionales a aquellos elementos que sabrían “corregir” los límites de sus propios “vecinos”, y que permitieran a México alcanzar esa homogeneidad poblacional tan anhelada. Sin embargo, las crecientes posibilidades económicas ofrecidas por el estado noroccidental, junto a la cercanía con Estados Unidos, hicieron de la “cuestión demográfica” sonorense decimonónica un caso muy controvertido. Entre los inmigrantes que acudieron al llamado del “progreso”, en efecto, solo algunos contribuyeron a fortalecer cultural y genéticamente la identidad deseada, corroborando el estereotipo de “ciudadano imaginado – blanco”, católico e idóneo a la nueva economía de mercado. Los otros terminaron en cambio por ocupar “las plazas dejadas libres por los indígenas”, y se volvieron las nuevas víctimas del racismo local

After the independence, each Latin American country was called to the economic reorganization of the internal political and socio‐cultural identity of its citizens. In Mexico, however, the diffuse regionalism and the lack of basic communication infrastructure ‐ prevailed until the late nineteenth century ‐ favored strongly that each entity filed the practice to own geo‐historical context. Along with the other areas, for example, Sonora shared distrust of Indians, "obstacle" to development. Likewise it involved the need to look outside national borders to those elements that could fix the limits of their own “neighbors”, and that would allow Mexico to reach that population homogeneity as the nation desired. However, the increasing economic opportunities offered by the northwestern state, along with the proximity to the United States, made the nineteenth Sonoran "demographic issue" a very controversial case. Among the immigrants who answered to the call of progress, in fact, only some helped to strengthen the identity culturally and genetically, corroborating stereotype of the “imagined citizen” ‐ white, Catholic and suitable to the new market economy. Instead the others ended to fill “the spots left open by the Indians”, and became the new victims of Local racism
