Abstract

This work reviews the different medieval medica] theories which connect lovesickness with melancholy in order to determine which of them are taken into account by La Celestina' s authors to create their main characters. Rojas could probably follow the theory that advised against the sexual therapy to fight lovesickness because he thought that it was caused by a melancholy temperament; in this case, that therapy was not recommended owing to their short possibilities to put it into practice. For this reason, the author makes act his two main characters as if they were much more ill, after having carried out the sexual relationship.
