La experiencia literaria riqueña: cuestiones de migración, lengua e identidad

Abstract

El propósito de este artículo es presentar la relación migración/lengua/ identidad en las letras puertorriqueñas, analizando cómo este trinomio no sólo se ve reflejado en la temática de las obras de algunos de sus escritores, sino también en la elección del código lingüístico que estos mismos autores hacen a la hora de escribir sus relatos, novelas o poemas –dependiendo del lugar desde donde articulen su discurso. En este sentido, podemos distinguir dos claras tendencias en la literatura ‘riqueña’ actual. Por una parte, se encuentran los escritores que viven asiduamente en Puerto Rico y que escriben primordialmente en español; por otra parte, tenemos a aquellos escritores que adoptaron el inglés como lengua de expresión cuando emigraron a Estados Unidos, principalmente a la ciudad de Nueva York, y que han pasado por este motivo a ser denominados ‘neorriqueños’.

The Rican literary experience: migration, language and identity issues. The purpose of this article is to show the relationship migration/ language/identity in the Puerto Rican literary tradition and to analyze how this trinomial is reflected not only in the topics that some writers explore in their works, but also in the linguistic choice that those authors make when writing their stories, novels, poems –depending on the place where they are writing from. In this sense, we can distinguish two clear trends in the current ‘Rican’ literary tradition. On the one hand, there are some writers who frequently live in Puerto Rico and write basically in Spanish. On the other hand, there are some other authors who adopted the English language when they emigrated to the United States, mainly to New York City, and who have been named ‘Nuyoricans’ accordingly.
