Abstract

Linguistic accommodation processes of the Latin American immigration in Madrid. This study analyzes the response of Latin American immigrants living in Madrid to a universal linguistic change affecting the system of politeness. We examine the linguistic attitudes of this group towards the politeness system of the native population of Madrid and later, we contrast these attitudes with the group's linguistic behaviour, as immigrants experience a shift away from the power axis and towards its progressive replacement with a solidarity axis. The results illustrate a pattern of linguistic accommodation to the receiving community, which characterizes the social and cultural assimilation associated with migratory processes
