Abstract
The nation as a subject of study has attracted the attention of many historians and has
generated debate. Two bicentennials coincide these years: the independence of Latin
America and the Spanish Constitution of 1812; the birth of Spanish American and
Spanish modern nations. Analysing the construction of a nation by comparing the
cases of Argentina and Spain, two countries with so many historical and cultural ties,
through the researches conducted by some historians might be very interesting. The
topic will be approached considering the nation as a political project, studying its
evolution throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and the different ways in which both
countries faced the challenges they found. The aim is to examine the conditions which
led to a convergent result: Argentina and Spain as modern nations at the dawn of the
21st century, and to check if that is true indeed.
