Introducción al paisaje lingüístico de Madrid

Abstract

En este estudio se aplica por vez primera a Madrid la línea de análisis sociolingüístico iniciada por Landry y Bourhis (1997) sobre el Paisaje Lingüístico (PL). Este consiste en la presencia escrita de distintas lenguas en espacios públicos, interpretable como índice de la vitalidad etnolingüística de los grupos de población hablantes de diversas lenguas en un territorio. El estudio del PL resulta especialmente interesante en Madrid por la novedosa situación plurilingüe de la capital (frente a su habitual monolingüismo), producto de la apertura del país a la inmigración, sobre todo desde los años 90. Así, el castellano de Madrid se ha puesto en contacto simultáneamente con múltiples lenguas y con otras variedades del español, las cuales se encuentran asimismo de forma inaudita en contacto entre sí, todo lo cual se refleja en el PL conforme lo hemos documentado fotográficamente en una muestra representativa de los espacios públicos madrileños.

This is the first study to apply to Madrid the sociolinguistic theoretical framework known as the "linguistic landscape" (LL), the capital of Spain, originally developed by Landry and Bourhis (1997). LL is defined as the written presence of different languages in public spaces, which is indexical of the ethnolinguistic vitality of the different linguistic communities in a given territory. This approach is of great interest to the analysis of Madrid due to the recent multilingualism that has appeared the city since the 1990s as a by-product of immigration. Against this backdrop, Castilian Spanish has, for the first time, come into simultaneous contact with several other languages and varieties of Spanish such as those of the Americas. This new situation can be seen in the LL of Madrid as documented in the series of photographs selected by the authors based on their representativeness of the public space of Madrid.
