Abstract
This article presents an overview of the development of immigration research in the United States and its current situation. From a sociological perspective, various schools are
chronologically analyzed. Starting with the assimilation paradigm, the Parsonian school and
the Chicago school, the author explores the transition period (1960-1980) as well as new
approaches to immigration studies. The main objective of this article is to provide a framework
for the comparative study of intemational immigration to the United States and to Spain.
