The Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca is the most important trip in Islam. However, people in the medieval West did not know its real meaning, and thought that instead of visiting the sanctuary of the Kaíba, Muslims went to see and worship the sarcophagus of Muhammed, which was believed to be suspended in the air by virtue of a magnet. In this article I study this myth both in medieval westem nautical charts, and in textual sources. It is curious to find this error even in regions such as the Iberian Peninsula, where Christians lived in close contact with Muslims, and it is remarkable how long the myth endured.
