Abstract

The direct observation of the literary work of humanists and the proven leading role of humanistic rhetoric as a means of political propaganda led Alonso de Cartagena (1385-1456) to reconsider many issues about the nature of the literary activity and the social function of the writer. He would definitely aim at this two-faced target whenever he got down to write. Back home from his stay in Basel (1439), he devoted himself to writing letters, both in Latin and Castilian, which evidence a further development in his literary creation; the topic of friendship, that is established in the intellectual relationship, is very important. He even undertook the writing of a dialogue, but still in a medieval manner. In this way Cartagena is a precursor of two humanistic literary genres in Castile. A set of unpublished letters by Alonso is included in the appendix.
