¿Es tan "nueva" la "Nueva Geografía Económica"? Sus aportaciones, sus límites y su relación con las políticas

Abstract

El artículo reconoce y aplaude los valores de este nuevo enfoque de los análisis territoriales. Uno de sus principales méritos ha sido lograr una clara revitalización de los estudios regionales y urbanos y que pasen a ocupar plaza en la mainstream de la Ciencia Económica. Asimismo, la llamada “Nueva” Geografía Económica ha empujado a que los geógrafos más tradicionales acepten la necesidad de renovar sus planteamientos. Sin embargo, el texto subraya asimismo algunos de los fallos y limitaciones de la NGE. Entre ellos, haber ignorado, no está claro si deliberadamente, las aportaciones previas de muchos geógrafos y economistas sobre los mismos temas propuestos por los fundadores destacados de esta corriente, Krugman, Fujita y Venables. Entre las limitaciones se destacan, entre otras, el enfoque en exceso académico y formal de muchas aportaciones que comparten este “nuevo” enfoque, la aparente pérdida de impulso innovador que se observa en los últimos años y la escasa atención a los problemas y propuestas de política regional.

The paper acknowledges the Essentials value of this new approach to the territorial analysis. One of its main contributions has been the revitalization of regional and urban studies and their incorporation into the mainstream of Economics. On the other hand, the so called “New” Economic Geography has also pushed the most traditional geographers to renew their approaches. Nevertheless, the paper underlines some shortcomings and limitations of the NEG. Between them, to have ignored –it is not clear if voluntarily- the previous contributions of many geographers and economists on the same topics proposed by the main founders of this school, Krugman, Fujita and Venables. Between their limitations, the paper marks also the almost exclusive academic and formal character of many contributions sharing this “new” approach, the loss of innovative push that can be observed in the last years and the poor attention paid to the problems and proposals of regional policy.
