Wilson, Mac John
One of the consequences of globalization in Spain has been the import of the so-called Anglo suburban culture coming from the western world. The development of this culture comes from pastoral roots, in that humans seek to live peacefully with each other as well as with non-humans. Nevertheless, as it has come into contact with capitalism, this pastoral culture has failed because it is commodified like any other consumer product. The Spanish residential communities that have inherited this cultural history in part are known as "urbanizaciones". In Clara Sanchez's novel, "Últimas noticias del paraíso", these communities reveal themselves as places built to bring together humanity and nature but that, from the perspective of a coming-of-age adolescent, in actuality are centers of artificiality condemned to banality. What this current work proposes is that "Últimas noticias del paraíso" presents itself as an anti-pastoral and in this way underlines the problems that the globalization of capitalistic culture brings with it by spreading alienation and ambivalence on the part of humanity when confronted with the natural world, even while maintaining a pastoral mask.; Una de las consecuencias de la globalización en España ha sido la importación de

The ambivalence of the gene trade in Octavia E. Butler’s Xenogenesis trilogy
información genética.; The ambivalence of gene trading in Octavia Butler's "Xenogenesis" trilogy is treated
in this paper. Genetic manipulation is one of the main science-related issues addressed
in that trilogy. The behavior of the alien race presented in the paper, the Oankali, is
analyzed from three points of view and compared with contemporary human behavior.
Interbreeding with other species and the creation of new ones, the use of genetic
engineering to cure diseases and the acknowledgement of DNA information as property
when it is used for research or other objectives are considered.

Material ecocriticism: materiality, agency, and models of narrativity
Iovino, Serenella; Oppermann, Serpil
relacionaremos con sus efectos en la ecocrítica y en la ética.; The proliferation of studies bearing on the intellectual movement known as the
"new materialisms" evinces that a material turn is becoming an important paradigm in
environmental humanities. Ranging from social and science studies, feminism, to
anthropology, geography, environmental philosophies and animal studies, this approach
is bringing innovative ways of considering matter and material relations that, coupled
with reflections on agency, text, and narrativity, are going to impact ecocriticism in an
unprecedented way.
In consideration of the relevance of this debate, we would like to draw for
Ecozon@'s readers an introductory map of the new paradigm and introduce what can be
called "material ecocriticism." We will illustrate what we consider to be its main
features, situating them in the conceptual horizons of the new materialisms. From this
genealogical sketch, we will examine the re-definitions of concepts like matter, agency,
discursivity, and intentionality, with regard to their effects on ecocriticism and in terms
of their ethical perspectives.

Der Mensch im Katastrophenuniversum. Zum Verhältnis von Historie, Naturgeschichte und Poetik im Frühwerk Arno Schmidts
Zbytovsky, Stepan
A. Goodbody, H. Zapf).; Among the representations of nature in Arno Schmidt's early texts from the
debut novel "Leviathan" towards his radio features, scenes of diverse loci terribiles and
destructive forces of nature take a prominent place. In several texts, natural processes
and disasters are described as trigger or executor of the apocalypse. In analogy with the
dual significance of the term ‘natural catastrophe’, which refers to both the extreme
natural event itself and its impact on culture and civilisation, Schmidt linked scientific
data with mythological and other cultural patterns of interpretation in these passages.
Starting from the concept of nature as Leviathan, Schmidt's understanding of nature is
examined, and shown to be one in which natural disasters are understood not as
contingent accidents, but as defining moments of natural history. These are closely
interwoven by Schmidt with culture and human history, and mirrored in his poetological
programme. This article focuses on the connections between the three components, in
the context of Germans coming to terms with the past and the discourse of cultural
ecology (especially A. Goodbody, H. Zapf).
