Carlos Sola, Maialen de
In the realm of postcolonial studies, the concept of silence has not received as comprehensive an analysis as some other notions within the field. However, authors like Abdulrazak Gurnah have deftly integrated this concept into their works, thereby providing a distinctive perspective on narratives of immigration. Despite boasting an illustrious career as both a writer and an academic, it was only upon being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021 that Gurnah’s work garnered the recognition it undeniably merited. This dissertation seeks to redress this imbalance and cast a spotlight on Abdulrazak Gurnah’s invaluable contributions, with a focused lens on the intricate formation of identity. To accomplish this aim, the dissertation centres its attention on Gurnah’s novels Admiring Silence (1996) and The Last Gift (2011). These two literary works encapsulate the full scope of the author's career and offer rich material for insightful examination. Through a comparative analysis of these novels, the study delves profoundly into the intricate complexities of identity construction within the realm of first-generation immigrants. It further scrutinises the roles that silence and untruths play in moulding notions of home and belonging. Concurrently, the exploration extends to investigating the potential for hybridity amid the tapestry of immigrant experiences. This endeavour seeks not only to amplify Abdulrazak Gurnah’s narrative voice but also to illuminate the concepts of silence and the perception of the subaltern within his characters and tales. Additionally, it takes into account his personal life and the political landscape of Zanzibar to gain a better understanding of the novels and the figure of the author himself.; En el ámbito de los estudios poscoloniales, el concepto de silencio no ha recibido un análisis tan completo como algunas otras nociones dentro de este campo.

Film adaptations of literary works have been linked to the problem of fidelity, valuing an
adaptation by the degree of fidelity to the original work and not by what they contribute
as independent works of art. New adaptation studies theories are emerging that place the
adaptation over the literary work, moving away from the problem of fidelity. Specifically,
the approach that concerns us in this work is that of the influence of historical and cultural
contexts on adaptations. To this end, three film adaptations of Charles Bukowski's works
have been chosen: L'amour est un chien de l'enfer (1987), Lune Froide (1991) and
Factotum (2005). In order to carry out the analysis, the place of origin of the directors,
the historical moment in which they were made, and the specific context of reception of
each of the productions will be taken into account. Through this analysis, the importance
of adaptations as cultural texts, adapting the original work but also to their own context,
2022-01-01T00:00:00ZInto the spotlight : the construction and representation of women in contemporary feminist drama : Caryl Churchill’s "Top girls" and Marina Carr’s "The Mai"Martín Amor, Martahttp://hdl.handle.net/10017/501562023-12-14T16:53:09Z2020-01-01T00:00:00ZInto the spotlight : the construction and representation of women in contemporary feminist drama : Caryl Churchill’s "Top girls" and Marina Carr’s "The Mai"
Martín Amor, Marta
In spite of the significant role theatre has historically had in most cultures, women have been, one way or another, banned from it, whether in terms of authorship, on-stage
presence, or complex characterisation. From legal prohibitions that forbid women from
professionally acting, to the social pressure that prevented female dramatists from seeing their plays staged, it has not been until relatively recently that women have been allowed to occupy a more significant place within the theatrical arena. The almost total male domination of the theatrical sphere that existed both in England and Ireland has been defied in the last century by a new wave of female playwrights, who have drawn on often
controversial topics that had never been tackled before on stage, or if they had, only from an exclusively male viewpoint. Contemporary dramatists, among them Caryl Churchill and Marina Carr, have taken the baton and have tried to expose, criticise, and even subvert the ever-present male bias when it comes to the representation of women and the female
experience in drama.
Through two of their more representative plays, "Top Girls" (1982) and "The Mai" (1994) respectively, the aim of this dissertation is to analyse the female theatrical tradition that has been influential in contemporary female-written drama. Moreover, it will explore the construction of the different female characters that appear in the aforementioned plays in depth, especially regarding the representation of the female experience from the perspective of these women, the way they appropriate and redefine traditionally male spaces, the depiction of motherhood and family dysfunctionality, and the influence of religious institutions in perpetuating oppression. Simultaneously, taking into account the historical framework provided, the goal is also to discuss the role of both Churchill and
Carr in reshaping the previously established female figure in the dramatic tradition, rather
archetypal and biased.

Li, Xinyi
As a famous Japanese-British writer, Kazuo Ishiguro initially attracted the attention of
society for his special identity. However, he has always been committed to writing for
people of different nationalities and generations, and he considers himself an
international writer. This thesis will examine his books A Pale View of the Hills and An
Artist of the Floating World in terms of trauma theory, exploring the traumatic events,
the performance of the traumatized, the causes of trauma, the techniques of trauma
narrative and the ways of healing. The exploration of these painful experiences in his
novels not only reflects the social significance of Ishiguro's literary work, but also
contributes greatly to solving the problem of trauma in real society.
