Vitalaru, Bianca

most frequent mitigation and attenuation strategies used by the
Spanish operator and the Spanish-Russian interpreter in roadside assistance conversations
with mediated telephone interpreting in the Spanish-Russian
combination. The frequency of
some strategies and their manifestation in the two languages involved are compared and, finally,
a list of useful recommendations
for operators, interpreters, and

estrategias en trabajos académicos elaborados por
auxiliares de conversación en España
Vitalaru, Bianca
Este artículo incluye un
análisis de trabajos académicos que
se centran en aspectos culturales
escritos por estudiantes de máster en
el programa ‘Teach & Learn in
Spain’ en el Instituto Franklin-UAH.
El porcentaje de trabajos académicos
de estas características escritos por
estos estudiantes que actuaron como
auxiliares de conversación (AC) en
colegios bilingües en España es
bastante alto, lo que sugiere la
importancia del componente cultural
en la enseñanza del inglés como
segunda lengua y su alto nivel de
conciencia sociocultural. Por lo tanto,
este artículo tiene varios objetivos: a)
determinar la existencia de una
conciencia sociocultural específica en
los trabajos de investigación; b)
identificar los aspectos culturales que
fueron considerados esenciales por
los AC en este programa y mostrar
las estrategias utilizadas para
proporcionar información; y c)
comparar hallazgos considerando
objetivos; This paper includes an
analysis of academic papers that
focus on cultural aspects written by
MA students in the ‘Teach &
Learn in Spain’ program at
Instituto Franklin-UAH. The
percentage of academic papers
focusing on cultural aspects written
by these students who acted as
Language Assistants (LAs) in
bilingual schools in Spain is quite
high. This suggests the importance
of the cultural component in the
teaching of English as a second
language and their high level of
sociocultural awareness. Thus, this
paper has several objectives: a) to
determine the existence of a
specific sociocultural awareness in
research papers; b) to identify the
cultural aspects that were
considered essential by the LAs in
this program and show the
strategies used to provide
information; and c) to compare
findings considering the theoretical
background. The method will rely
on a mixt approach considering
quantitative and qualitative
analyses and will be specific for
each of the objectives.

Olivares Leyva, Mónica
This article addresses the debate over Graham Greene’s "The living room" (1953) in Franco’s
Spain, where theatre critics created a controversy over the play by questioning whether this Catholic dramatic work was heretical or orthodox. It was regarded as a cultural asset to the national stage, but it was also interpreted as a threat to Catholics of wavering faith. In addition, this study uses the censorship files to examine the attitude of the Franco regime towards the play. Contrary to popular belief, Franco’s government did not favour the reception of this play despite the fact that Greene was an internationally renowned Catholic
writer. On the contrary, banned four times, it ranks among Greene’s most censored works under Franco’s rule. The article concludes by suggesting that "The living room" became an uncomfortable Catholic play because it clashed with the tenets of the regime.; Este artículo pone de manifiesto el debate que tuvo lugar en la España de Franco en torno a

of immigration: online availability and
corpus for translators and interpreters
Vitalaru, Bianca
foreign patients in Spain that are currently available in open access as well as to compile
good practices in this regard. In addition, we aim to develop a multilingual corpus of health
information texts useful for translators and interpreters in public services. The results show
a general inclusive trend and there are several examples of good practices regarding the
variety of health topics approached and languages in which the translated materials are
available online. They also show the important work done especially by associations and
foundations. However, there are very few texts with information on how the Spanish health
system works and especially on the patients’ rights and obligations. Moreover, the inclusion of more topics would also be helpful. Furthermore, the level of representation of the
different languages is still unequal within the same autonomous community and between
the different autonomous communities. The same applies regarding the topics approached
and the number of translated texts that should be available. Our article proposes a basic
work plan, a list of materials to be translated in the Madrid region, and a corpus of texts
that can be manipulated for thematic research and to generate terminological materials
for translators and interpreters
