%X Books made in the XVII th. century are distinguished by a number of special characteristics which are easy to recognize: the front page, the preliminary pages, and the text printed inside the book. In this paper the author explains how prints, which became the most important way to illustrate books in that century, were printed and organized hierarchically into a formal structure. In the same way, the most representative illustrations of the different parts of the book are studied. The Baroque illuminated book will be the privileged instrument used by both the royal and the religious bodies for the transmission of different theoretical propagandistic topics for their needs whose diffussion became fundamental. Images were comoposed following very well defined iconographic patterns, as an instrument of conservative ideology. So, both their programatic and artistic features are considered in this paper
