It has been considered as a key moment in the foreign policy of the United States. The conflict with Spain represented a change to the international policy developed until then, the begining of the American participation in the world policy, the decisive impulse to the overseas expansion, the confirmation of the interests of the United States in the Caribbean and the Far East. The present articles reviews the debate raised in the North-American historiography. It sets the different interpretations in their historical frame; and it fucuss its attention on a set of questions: the actions of President McKinley during the Spanish-American War, the reasons for the overseas expansion of the United States; the influence of different groups over this process; the acquisition of the Philippine Islands; the anexation of Hawaii; the American interests in China. %K Historia de América %K America-History %K Filología %K Philology %~ Biblioteca Universidad de Alcala
