%0 Journal Article %A González, Alejandro %T Preventing homophobia through English in year 6 of primary education %D 2015 %@ 1989-0796 %U http://hdl.handle.net/10017/25340 %X Homophobia is the most common hate crime in our current society and it also exists in the schools. The Spanish educational system is sensitive to this issue: the law recognizes affective-sexual diversity and highlights the importance of overcoming sexist behaviour, so that the students learn to respect and value diversity. There is also homophobic bullying in the last years of Primary education, such as the group of students this project focuses on: twenty-seven sixth graders who study in a bilingual state school located in a working class area of Madrid. Given that this school runs a bilingual program, the objective of this action research project is double: both linguistic and attitudinal: to improve the students’ linguistic skills in the target language (English) while carrying out cross-curricular activities referred to the prevention of homophobia and acceptance of diversity. The results show that homophobic attitudes register a lower acceptance from the group of students at the end of the project, which also demonstrates that a foreign language can be used to teach values effectively.
